How to use the Basketball Scouting Report Template

  1. Type the opponent, the date, their record, the place and who scouted. The report header fills in as you type.
  2. Pick the pace of the team: Fast, Medium or Slow, or leave it unset.
  3. Tick what they run on offense: man-to-man, attacking zone, motion, pick and roll, post ups, fast break, isolation or lots of threes.
  4. Tick what they run on defense: man-to-man, 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, full-court press, half-court trap, switching screens or packline.
  5. Fill in up to six key players: number, name, position, shooting hand, strengths and how to defend them.
  6. Write your notes and your game plan. Both are printed on the lines at the bottom of the page.
  7. Check the report preview, then press Download PDF or Print. The two half courts are left empty so you can draw the plays you saw by hand with a pen.

Everything you type is saved in this browser on this device only. Clear the form starts a new report. Print the empty form first if you want to scout by hand in the stands and type the report later, or keep the page open on a phone and type as you watch.

What should a basketball scouting report include?

A scouting report answers three questions for the coaches and players before a game: how does this team play, who are the players who decide it, and what do we do about it. For the first, note the pace (do they push the ball or slow it down), their main offensive sets and the defenses they use, including any press. For the second, list the three or four players who take the most shots or handle the ball, with their strong hand, where they like to shoot from and one habit. For the third, finish with a game plan of two or three short points your players can remember.

Keep the report to one page. A long report is read by the coach and nobody else, while a page with ticks and short lines can be handed to the starters on the bench.

How do you scout a team you have not seen?

Ask the coach of a team that played them, watch a recorded game, or go to one of their games and keep the form on a clipboard. Watch the first five minutes for the offense and the defense, then watch the key players when they do not have the ball, and count how many of their shots come from three, from the post and from the break. A single game is a small sample, so write what you saw and mark anything you are not sure about with a question mark.

How do you use the report with the team?

Share the page before practice and run the opponent’s two main sets against your second team so the starters see them once at game speed. Tell each player one personal job from the “How to defend” column, and review the plan again in the last timeout of the first half.
