This free flag football playbook tool lets you build a playbook from a library of plays, arrange them, and print them or save them as a PDF. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and nothing you enter is uploaded. The page opens with a ready 5v5 playbook of 14 plays, so you can start from a working set and change it for your team. Each page shows the playbook title, a page number, and every play’s number, name and notes. You can set the paper size, orientation and number of plays per page before you print. If you want a printable flag football playbook without starting from a blank page, this is the place to begin.

How to use the Flag Football Playbook

  1. Open the page. The 14 5v5 plays load into “Your plays” on the left.
  2. To switch formats, pick one in the From list on the right, such as 4v4, 7v7 or the flag defenses, then press Use all of these.
  3. To add a single play, find it in the library and press its + button. Plays you saved in the designer appear at the end of the library.
  4. To reorder plays, use the up and down buttons on each play in “Your plays”. To remove a play, use its remove button.
  5. Type a name in Playbook title.
  6. Choose a Paper size: US Letter or A4.
  7. Choose Plays per page: 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 or 12.
  8. Choose Orientation: portrait or landscape.
  9. Tick Show coaching notes and Number the plays if you want them printed.
  10. Check the preview below the buttons. It shows exactly the pages that will print.
  11. Press Download PDF for a sharp PDF, Print to send it to a printer, or Copy link to get a link that rebuilds the whole playbook.

Your list is remembered in this browser for next time. Clear list empties it. Copy the link if you want to open the same playbook later or share it, since the link rebuilds the whole playbook rather than a single play.

What should be in a flag football playbook?

A flag football playbook should list each play with its number, its name, the format it is for, and short coaching notes that say what each player does. The plays should also follow the rules of the format you play. For 5v5, the NFL FLAG rules (Official Playing Rules, revised 2025-03-24) set the limits that every play in your playbook must respect:

  • Each play allows one forward pass, thrown from behind the line.
  • The quarterback may not run the ball across the line.
  • Handoffs and pitches must happen behind the line.
  • There is no blocking or screening.
  • The center is on the line, up to 4 players may be on it, and the quarterback is off it.
  • Only one player may be in motion, moving parallel to or away from the line.
  • Up to 2 rushers may be used, and they start 7 yards from the line.
  • The quarterback has 7 seconds to throw.

Checking each play against these points before it goes into the playbook saves confusion on the field.

How many plays do you need for flag football?

There is no single correct number. Start with a set your players can learn in a few practices, then add more once they know the basics. The ready sets in the library show what a full playbook can look like: 14 plays for 5v5, 6 for 4v4, 8 for 6v6, 9 for 7v7 and 7 for 8v8. Grouping plays by type, such as short passes, deep passes and runs, makes them easier to remember. The library also has 6 trick plays that obey the NFL FLAG rules; with From set to 5v5 they appear in the list with a + button, so you can add them one at a time when your team is ready.

Number the plays so players can call them in the huddle or read them from a wristband card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a flag football playbook as a PDF?

Yes. Press Download PDF to save your playbook as a vector PDF, which stays sharp at any size. The PDF shows the same pages as the preview below the buttons.

Is it free and do I need an account?

The tool is free and needs no sign-up. It runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Can I print it or save it as a PDF?

You can do both. Press Print to send the playbook straight to a printer, or Download PDF to save it as a file. Check the preview first, because it shows exactly what will print.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The lists, settings and preview stack on a narrow screen, and the PDF opens in your phone’s PDF viewer for printing.

Can I make a playbook for a format other than 5v5?

Yes. Choose 4v4, 6v6, 7v7 or 8v8 in the From list, or the flag defenses, and press Use all of these to load that set of plays. You can then edit the list as you like.

Is my playbook saved if I close the page?

The list is remembered in this browser for next time.

Can I use what I make here commercially?

Yes. Sheets, cards, diagrams and PDFs you make with this tool are yours to print, hand out, sell or put in your own products, such as a coaching book on KDP or a printable on Etsy, with no credit needed. You may not copy the tool or the site itself; see the terms.
