Football Play Maker is a free tool for drawing football plays on a field diagram. You place offensive and defensive players, draw routes, runs, passes and blocks, then save, print or share the result. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and does not upload your plays anywhere.

The page opens on 11-man football with our I Dive play against a 4-3 defense, so you can start from a full 11-a-side play right away. For flag football, change the Format to 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7 or 8v8 and the field and player counts update to match. Coaches, players and parents can use it to sketch a play in a few minutes, check it against the rule check, and add coaching notes for the team.

How to use the Football Play Maker

  1. Choose a Format above the field: 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7, 8v8 or 11-a-side.
  2. Pick an Offense formation such as I formation, Shotgun or Spread. The formation loads onto the field.
  3. Pick a Defense: for 11-a-side a 4-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-3 or 6-2 front. The defenders appear on the field.
  4. Use Move to drag players into position. To adjust a route, tap it and drag its yellow points.
  5. Choose Route, tap a player, then tap where the route should go. Double-tap or press Enter to finish, or press Esc to cancel.
  6. To draw a block, set Line type to Block before you draw, or select a finished line and change its type. A block ends in a T.
  7. Use + Offense player, + Defender or + Cone to add players. Select a player to change its label (up to 3 characters) or its color.
  8. Read the rule check under the field and fix any problems it lists.
  9. Type a Play name and Coaching notes below the field.
  10. Click Save in this browser, Copy link, PNG image, SVG, Download PDF or Print.

Ctrl or Cmd+Z undoes a change, and Ctrl+Y or Shift+Ctrl+Z redoes it. Select a player or line and press Delete or Backspace to remove it. Flip mirrors the whole play left to right, which is useful when you want the same play to run to the other side. Plays saved in the browser stay on that device, so use Copy link or Download PDF to share one.

How do you make a football play?

A football play is a diagram that shows where every player lines up before the snap and where each one moves afterward. Start with a formation, place the offense and defense, then draw each movement and check the result against the rules.

Offensive linemen are labelled LT, LG, C, RG and RT. The tight end is Y, the backs are FB and RB, and the receivers are X, Z and H. Each label tells the team what job that player has in the play. A route shows a receiver’s path, a run line shows a ball carrier’s path, and a dashed line shows a pass. A handoff shows the ball moving from the quarterback to a back, and a motion line, drawn as a zigzag, shows a player moving before the snap. Blocks end in a T, which shows the defender that player blocks.

Once the movements are drawn, look at the play as a whole. Each route should match the timing you want, and each block should have a clear target. The rule check and coaching notes help you explain the play to the team.

How many players must be on the line in tackle football?

In 11-a-side tackle football, at least seven players must be on the line of scrimmage at the snap. This comes from the NFL 2026 Official Playing Rules, Rule 7. The rule check in this tool flags any 11-a-side play with fewer than seven players on the line, and it also checks that nobody is offside and that there is only one forward pass.

Flag football uses different limits. Under the NFL FLAG 5v5 rules that the tool checks, no more than four players can be on the line, and only one player can be in motion. Line splits on the field are drawn wider than real so the circles stay readable, so count players on the line by their positions rather than by the distance between them.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free and do I need an account?

Yes. The tool is free and needs no sign-up. It runs in your browser, and nothing you draw is uploaded.

Can I print it or save it as a PDF?

Yes. Download PDF creates one play per page with the coaching notes included, and Print sends the play to your printer. You can also save a PNG or SVG image.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. You drag players with a finger and tap to draw routes; the field fits the screen width.

How do I show blocks on a play diagram?

Draw a short line from the blocker toward the defender, then select it and change its type to Block. The line ends in a T, which is the standard way to show a block on a play diagram.

How many players must be on the line in tackle football?

For 11-a-side tackle football, at least seven players must be on the line at the snap. The rule check in the tool warns you if a play has fewer.

Can I use it for youth football?

Yes. The 11-a-side setup suits youth tackle teams, and our youth football plays open here ready to edit. For flag football, change the Format to 4v4 to 8v8; the rule check then uses the NFL FLAG 5v5 rules.
